Hello, I'm new to Mugen. I wanted to wait until I had all my stuff together before posting this. Essentially what I'm trying to do is figure out how to set up and run a 1,000 character Mugen game with the full roster of the King of Fighters anthology and a few additional characters from Marvel and Time Killers. I've downloaded the full anthology, multiples of the additional characters (I don't know which is which), and about 10 different Mugens. What do I do now? How do I set up Mugen so I can test characters? I have like 8 or 9 Sentinels, about 6 Juggernauts, several Magnetos, etc. I only need one of each but different artists all made the same character and I need to check each one and only keep the best ones.

People use special programs to run MUGEN with too many characters, because MUGEN itself literally cannot handle that many. So you'll have to look up assist tools for MUGEN to see different ways to run excessive amounts of characters. The first thing you should try to find is something called "Quick VS" and "Mugen Watcher" / "Random-AI-Battles", that is really your best bet. You can also use things like DANZEY'S TOURNAMENT thing, but I don't know much about it, so you'll have to ask him about how it works.

Do I need all of them? I figured out that Mugen 1.1 does everything I need. Where do I put them? In the program files, or do I run Mugen through the program? Would it go under plug ins?

You place them in the same folder as the MUGEN exe file.

And no, you don't need all of them, just pick the one that works best for you, put all your characters into your character folder (with the proper folder name and .def name matching) and it should run its course without you needing to configure much.

I found them all and downloaded them, but I'm not sure what they do or how they work.

QUICK VS allows you to do matches between characters by simply putting in their name.

RANDOM-AI-BATTLES is the same thing, but with random characters, and I think it might allow for picking characters as well.

DANZEY'S TOURNAMENT is more or less a massive screenpack/toolkit that you put your MUGEN into or put your characters into, then use it to run the matches and test them, that sort of thing.

Other than that, I don't know much else you can do for testing characters.

Do the character files need to be unzipped to run? I play a lot of GZDoom and the .wad files will play zipped, but .pk3 files need to be unzipped. Do I just paste the .zip files into the "chars" folder?

Yes, every character needs to be in their own folder inside the "chars" folder. Leaving them in .zip or any other compressed file does no good.

The folder structure should go something like this

MUGEN FOLDER > CHARS > CHARACTER FOLDER > CHARACTER FOLDER NAME.def

I just need to test the extra characters that aren't in the KOF Anthology. Multiple people made the same character so I downloaded all of them to make sure I got one that works. I need to put the character in Mugen to see what they look like and how they play. I'll delete all the extra files when I can test them. I don't need multiples of the exact same character.

Ok, I've had some time to tinker around but I'm still hitting a wall. I tried unzipping several different characters and cutting and pasting their folders into the "chars" folder but it still only lets me pick Kung-Fu Man. I tested Boss Adelheid, Trol, and a Guilty Gear character. (Justice I think it was.) None of them worked. When I unzip them, there's a lot of subfolders in some of them. Boss Adelheid looks like this:

Adel-BOSS>Adel-Boss.def and 4 folders. (ACT, CNS, SFF, SND)

The character info is there, but it won't work. I also tried three of the Mugen assist tools.

- Mugen Watcher = Blank DOS? prompt.

- Quick Versus = Unable to run. Missing config file. There was only one file to download, and it was "quick-versus.exe". I tried dropping it into Mugen but got the same message.

- Random AI Battles = Works kinda. It contains a copy of Mugen Watcher in the files that does the same DOS prompt thing, but AI Battles seemed to work. It started a fight between the two Kung-Fu Men, but the Mugen I have has a watch feature. I'm not sure if I need AI Battles.

I didn't try the Danzy selector yet. When I downloaded it, I found tons of links to Danzy's YouTube channel. I may be able to find a tutorial there, or possibly ask the creator themself.

I appreciate all the help on this topic even though I'm probably frustratingly stupid about Mugen. Once I get it all figured out, I'll try to upload a finished version so other people can easily play it too. It might come in handy for other new people. I have all the right parts and programs, but I still can't figure out how to put it all together properly and make it fullscreen.
