Stage Transitions, is it possible?

I was wondering if stage transitions were a possibility. For example, round 1 is day time, round 2 is afternoon and round 3 is night time.

Can it also be done by changing the color of the background/sprites via palette or do you need a new background/sprites all together?

You'd have to do it through the characters; it's not natively possible through the stage, as stages lack a way to detect what the current roundno is.
