What are all the necessary sprites/anims to create a proper character?

I'm new to making characters and I want to make sure that when I'm done spriting all my animations I won't need to go back and make new sprites while I'm in the middle of using FF. Just repeating the title; what are all the necessary sprites? Thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot! And if you mind, do I have to use individual images for each frame, or can I just use GIF's?
