How to get an explod to hit?

How do you get an explod to hit? Like if I wanted my character to spawn spikes from the ground, the spikes are an explod but how would I get them to hit my enemy? I've tried using hitdef but i don't really understand.

give the explod a red clsn

code the hitdef (use kfm for reference)

was thinking of projectile

 

code the spikes as a helper

 

check out ryons tutorial for helpers (and coding in general)
