This stage is based on the location in Mortal Kombat X where Shinnok was captured in his Amulet by Raiden (Story Mode trailer) and where Sonya with Johnny tried to fight the Fallen Elder God.

I liked the idea of Jinsei, the mystical life energy that surrounds the Earthrealm. It is said that Shinnok wanted to poison Jinsei in order to weaken Earth (or destroy).
