Is being defensive worth it?

I have seen too many situations where the guy who plays smart and counters his opponent gets lambasted for his play whereas the guy who is all aggro is hailed even thought the same skills are in use( reading the opponent, spacing, timing, frame traps, etc.) so I ask; Is being a defensive player worth it?
