I have a question for you fellows who happen to be studying Japanese language like me.

I have a friend (I'm not lying, it really is for a firend) who has interest in learning Japanese from scratch, like I'm doing.

I would like to recommend him books for beginners. However, I can't recommend him the books I used so far, which are the books from Marugoto series:

The problem with them? They're focused in group activities and losing your fear of communicating with native Japanese people. Thus, their focus isn't grammar or extensive vocabulary, but conversation techniques.

And my friend's focus, like mine, doesn't seem to be communication, but reading and listening comprehension.

As much as Marugot ocan teach him some grammar and vocabulary, I would rather recommend some books more suitable for self-learning. Something that isn't so kanji-phobic as the Marugoto series.

    Any recommendation?

Strange. Japanese guys tend to make gijinkas of so many bizarre concepts:

    OS Systems (OS-Tans)
    Military Ships (Kantai Collection)
    Videogame consoles (Neptunia)
    Swords (Shinken!!)
    Soda cans (Akikan!)
    Penises (Chinbutsu)
    Lovercraft Monsters (Haiyore! Nyarko-san)

Yet, they never made anything with the concept of musical styles.

Since musical styles usually come with a fashion trend associated to them, their gijinkas would be considerably easy to do, and it would be easy to find a gijinka you can relate to.

And the possibilities are endless. A good Pixiv artist would have a field day with them.

    House-tan
    Enka-tan
    Funk-tan
    Gamelan-tan
    Jitterbug-tan
    Mambo-tan
    Doo-wop-tan
    Vaporwave-tan
    Glam Rock-tan
    Minimal-tan
    Gregorian Chant-tan
    Tribal-tan

and so on. It sounds much more interesting than anthropomorphizing railway stations, pepper species or salmon fillets.

Yes. Kemono Friends is as good as people say. The art is indeed clumsy, the cast consists of nothing but animals anthropomorphized into cute girls and this might turn people off as it did to me initially.

But the way the story was told, and the way the interactions between the characters were portrayed, were somehing totally different from any anime I watched before.

It doesn't appeal to meaningless violence or  sexualization (there are the penguin girls, who are sexualized and their design clash a little with the other girls, but they are as well-characterized as everybody else, so I give them a pass).

It also receives props for the fact that I didn't find any of the characters dislikable.

I could write a lot about how refreshing my experience with the anime was, but I don't have the skills to point all the qualities the show displayed.

It takes a little to get used to, but I recommend it, if you're curious about what the fuss is about (like I was).

As an enthusiast of the Japanese language, I really find interesting their point of view about foreign cultures, and how they wish for things that are common in other cultures (things as simple like hugs), but rare or inexistant in their society.

    -------------------------
A video about why Japanese (and south-Koreans, who suffer a similar problem) are well known for being terrible at English.

The reason is why their teachers themselves aren't prepared to teach English. Their society as a whole still doesn't see a need of globalizing, hence they don't train people to use English language in a practical way.

    -------------------------
Advantages and disadvantages of speaking English in their opinion.

    -------------------------
"What do Japanese envy about foreigners?"

    Things like:
"Foreign babies look like little angels, Japanese babies look like little sumo fighters." Really.

I assume that most of you guys are familiar with the most famous Commodore64 video game soundtrack, the main theme from Monty on the Run, from the compositor Rob Hubbard (yes, this is another post about obscure video game soundtracks).

It's often described as the best C64 soundtrack (Tim Follin's Ghouls and Ghosts intro theme notwithstanding) ,clocking at absurds 6 minutes, and impressive enough to be chosen as the BGM from the end-game castle section of I Wanna Be The Guy:

What you guys might not know is that the complexity seen in Monty on the Run theme can be seen in many other soundtracks composed by Rob Hubbard. I'll show my favorite ones:

    Crazy Comets theme:
Well, the shapes of the wave sounds don't lie. The variety of special effects coming one after another as the song runs is unreasonable. It makes clear that Rob Hubbard experimented A LOT during the creation song .

Special attention goes to the slap bass line that starts at 0:41, which will set up the groovy feeling of the song:

    International Karate theme:

The variety of sounds is less intense in this song (but still abundant), which makes the contrast between the sound effects even more evident.

The song is far slow and more soothing than the previous ones. Well, until 4:07, though. Then the pacing changes completely for an action-oriented soundtrack.

The highlight goes to the section at 7:35, which plays only the percussion notes. It shows perfectly how much variety of sounds one can include in a single sound channel for the sake of making a song more interesting to hear.

And, now, my favorite one of the batch. Nemesis the Warlock:

Describe it would take too long, hence I'll just let you guys take your own conclusions. From 4:10 onwards it  starts sounding more like a Sega Genesis track than anything else.

It's worth mentioning that you can see that all these soundtracks were made with only 3 sound channels, composed for a chipsound that, despite all its features, simply can't play 2 notes simultaneously, and yet they sound so complex and rich.

That's it. I hope you guys enjoyed this demonstration of how Rob Hubbard is much more than just the composer of the Monty on the Run soundtrack.
