All you have to do is go to your profile then go to the right upper corner of the blank background you should see some transparent options and one of them should say 'cover photo' once you click that you should be able to upload a picture for that background in your profile. I think the resolution can be about 500x200 or 600X200 ...usually when you upload the picture it stretches out to fit that background in you profile.
