It may have already been out on other systems (haven't been keeping track) but it's now out on steam. What is the HD remaster? Well, it's an HD version of the remake released on the gamecube in 2002. It was a must have for gamecube owners back in the day.

Those of you saying "THEY REMADE IT FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME" are stupid though. The original 1996 game wasn't "remade a million times" as some of you "non-fans" think. It was ported from the PS1 to various consoles, even a gameboy color port was planned (but cancelled because Capcom didn't like the presentation, which is how we ended up with Gaiden)

Despite its popularity, the 1996 game is no longer canon. The REmake is considered what truly happened that night at the mansion. (though the actual canon is mostly Chris's gameplay with some of Jill's, so it's a mix of the two that gives the true canon.)

Among the things introduced in the 2002 game were retconned. The REmake is supposed to be 70% different from the original. Here's a list of what's different from the 1996 game.

-In addition to some of the old places you can explore, an entire West wing of the mansion is explorable now and actually early parts of the game have it to where you have to travel through it to get required items.

-A new back story for how the mansion was built was added. Involving an architect named George Trevor. Him and his family are abducted by Umbrella for knowing too much about the mansion. His wife and daughter are experimented on and he dies in one of the many traps he designed for the mansion via starvation. His wife is killed for showing no bonding to the virus and his daughter becomes a guinea pig for decades to come

-That guinea pig, Lisa Trevor, is also a key plot point. A horrid abomination some 30 years later when the survivors of STARS alpha team find her. She's immortal and cannot be killed. (only knocked unconcious and it's a waste of ammo to do so. It's better to run from her as her attacks can kill you in about three hits) she's also the key source of the G Virus from RE2.

-Better acting obviously.

-Barry no longer uses a Colt Python as his preferred side arm. Instead, he has a custom Colt Anaconda named "The Silver Serpent". The Colt Python is demoted to a weapon you find on the mansion grounds. This Anaconda is used in RE5 and The Mercenaries 3D as a melee attack. Jill can acquire the Anaconda if Barry dies, but there's no reserve ammo for it and it only carries about 7 shots.

-Speaking of the colt python, it's now obtained via the wind crest puzzle in the courtyard cemetary.

-The game has defensive weapons. Items that can be used immediately when grabbed by a zombie or other enemy. There are three types of defensive weapons and all of them are scattered throughout the mansion:

  • The defense dagger which both Jill and Chris can use. This weapon deals about half of the assailant's health in damage. Chris or Jill take it and stab the attacker into the side of their head. This is enough to cause a zombie to become grounded. If you manage to decapitate a zombie that was previously stabbed by one, you can get the defense dagger back for another use.
  • Stun Gun/Taser (Jill only.): Jill must find batteries scattered throughout the mansion to use this. When an enemy latches onto her, it's an instant kill using this, frying the zombie or other attacker to a crisp. This counts as burning the corpes btw, so you can save some of your kerosine.
  • Flash Grenade (Chris only) scattered throughout the mansion, Chris can use this flash bang to instantly decapitate any enemy that pins him down or grabs him. He shoves it in the attacker's mouth and they sit there for a few seconds unable to move before it explodes and decapitates them. The flash grenade can be blown up prematurely by shooting it. This will decapitate any enemy that grabs or pins Chris down, even Hunters! Caution is advised however, as the blast can injure chris pretty badly if he's too close when the flash grenade explodes.

-Zombies must now be decapitated or have their bodies burned. Leaving a dead zombie will cause V-ACT to activate. V-ACT causes the zombie to become a crimson head, a much faster, more powerful variation with sharp claws, blood-red heads (hence the name), and white glowing eyes. Decapitating a zombie will stop it from coming back as a crimson head. Otherwise, after killing a zombie, you'll need to use the fuel canteen (with kerosine inside of it. You can find it in various places throughout the mansion, mostly in or near save rooms) and lighter (Chris starts with a lighter while Jill has to find it) to burn the corpses (Jill can burn zombies by also killing them with flame rounds from her grenade launcher or using her stun gun), otherwise, 15 to 30 minutes later, the Zombie will reawaken as a Crimson head and come charging at you. The damage they deal is nothing to sneer at too. The good news is, if you do happen to forget any zombies and they come back as crimson heads, once they're dead, they don't come back. There are a few crimson heads that you're forced to fight however.

edit for update: If you're running a lowend PC, I don't recommend the PC port. Wait for the console ports to launch or get the original gamecube version or the port to the Wii.
